Changes in Golf Equipment ? Article Squadron

Changes in golf equipment happen regularly. The United States Golf Association, receives over two thousand items of golf equipment at their Test Center annually. Tees, shafts and clubs are some of the things sent by ordinary people as well as top equipment companies. Testing, inspection and response help improve the many items available to golfers for the game they enjoy.

There was a time when there weren?t many changes in golf equipment. Most golfers had golf balls, tees, a putter, some irons and woods and a bag to put it all in. Now, changes in golf equipment are expected and welcomed.

Essentially, a golf club is a tool used to hit the golf ball. It consists of a shaft, grip and clubhead. The higher the number on the club, the shorter the shaft and the higher the resulting loft. Even though the swing is important, many factors create the ball?s response.

There are three types of golf clubs, including the putter, ideal for a putting green due to its low loft. The short grasses by the cup and alongside the greens are perfect for rolling the ball towards its destination.

Though it doesn?t sound like it, the other two types, irons and woods, are defined more by purpose than the material that forms them.

Irons, usually made with steel, have a head that is narrow from its face to the back. They provide the opportunity to make difficult shots, including high distance shots over trees.

Once made only from wood, woods now consist of a variety of things like steel, wood and titanium. They have a rather broad head and a longer shaft than irons, which adds speed to the ball.

More and more people have started golfing as a casual activity, anxious to have a good game without practicing for hours on a weekly basis with a myriad of different equipment. As a result, other types of clubs fill the space where neither irons nor woods are appropriate for casual golfers. Utility, rescue and hybrid clubs are accepted at most golf courses. The shape of the club?s head usually allows classification as a wood or an iron, if a definition is necessary, and the USGA addresses the issue in its book of rules.

One reason hybrid clubs are so popular is that amateur golfers are not able to effectively use some of the larger, heavier clubs that are often necessary to make a great shot. Hybrids, as the name implies, are a cross between a fairway wood and an iron. The compact heads make them easier to use than the iron clubs, resulting in the airborne shot needed for distance. There is more control over shots with a hybrid, as the shaft is shorter than that found on a wood club. When a person is comfortable with the swing and gets a great result from the shot, clubs like the hybrid will continue to be popular.

A golf bag full of clubs gives the impression of many choices and that is correct. A rule of thumb for golfers is to limit the number of clubs used during a round of golf to fourteen or less. A favorite club will generally be found in a bag, in addition to a set of irons, driver, putter, sand wedge and a couple of fairway woods.

Hybrid clubs, allowed on so many fairways, are replacing some of the heavier irons. Hybrids, available in sets or for individual purchase, make it easier to achieve loft without the player tiring out before the game is over. It is easy to see that once players find the clubs that provide a better game, golf often becomes their favorite pastime.

And the changes in golf equipment that will no doubt come in the future will keep the player happy and challenged by his/her game.
