How America Came To Torture Its Prisoners

Over and over again, in Afghanistan and Iraq, in Guant?namo, in secret CIA black sites and at CIA headquarters, in the Pentagon, and in Washington, men and women recognized the torture for what it was and refused to remain silent. They objected, protested, and fought to prevent, and then to end, these illegal and immoral interrogations. While the president and his top advisers approved and encouraged the torture of prisoners, there was dissent in every agency, at every?level.

This is Exceptional Client Care: The Dallas Green Story | The Zebra ...

reserved

Readers of my Zebra Report know that I?ve had misfortune to be on the receiving end of poor service a number of times over the years.? You may fondly remember my rant about meatballs at Olive Garden, or my rave about the staff at Bothell?s Hilton Garden Inn.

Today I want to tell you about phenomenal client care I experienced from one of my own clients ? Dallas Green, a real estate agent who works in Washington?s Tri-Cities of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco.

For the story to make sense, I need to give you a perspective of a couple of days of my life leading up to the experience.

As you know, some of my work time is spent coaching live with my EVOLVE and ENCORE clients, and some is spent on the road training agents in classes across the country.? Teaching requires a lot of physical and emotional energy, and time on the road can be draining.? I?m not complaining ? I love being out with agents!? But there?s no question that it can be exhausting.

On my schedule at the end of March were four ? day classes ? two to be taught in the Seattle area (western Washington, and two in the Tri-Cities (eastern Washington).? These were going to be taught back-to-back, so I knew it was going to be a tough couple of days.

Once the announcement of the Tri-Cities class was made I was thrilled to receive an email from Dallas Green, a member of my EVOLVE coaching group.? Dallas knew that, while I know some parts of eastern Washington well, I might want a recommendation for someplace to eat while I was in the Tri-Cities.?? He provided options for a number of restaurants in town, included the addresses and a link to the online menus, and even identified favorite dishes that he thought I might enjoy.? It was such a thoughtful gesture ? and I was really touched by the fact that he would go to that much trouble.

On March 28th, I was up around 4:00 am to drive the two hours from my home to the Seattle area.? That day I taught two interactive classes, with each session having in excess of 100 students.? After class we stayed to answer questions, so around 6:00 pm we packed up the car ? and began the 220 mile drive to the Tri-Cities.

By the time we arrived at 11:30 that night, we were all pretty tired.? Off to bed we went, knowing that the next day we had two more classes to deliver before driving 320+ miles back home that evening.

We had another great day of teaching while in the Tri-Cities, but by the end of that second full day I was ready for a nice meal before heading home.? How wonderful do you think it was to be able to pull up Dallas? email and get a recommendation?? Let me tell you ? it was a real treat!?? Based on his recommendation we selected a restaurant, and headed off.

Because Dallas coaches with me, he knows me pretty well ? and his #1 recommendation for our dinner that night was spot on.? The restaurant, Taverna Tagaris, offered Mediterranean-style food in a beautiful setting.

We plopped ourselves down, sniffed the amazing aromas, and all agreed how nice it was to have a restaurant recommendation from someone local.

But that?s not where the story ends.? No sooner had we received our menus than the waitress came over with a bottle of wine ? and Dallas Green?s business card.? She said, ?You must be Denise ? Dallas described you perfectly!?? And then she handed us Dallas? card and said the wine was a gift from him for us to enjoy.

Can you imagine how shocked we were?? As we looked around for Dallas to thank him, the waitress let us know that he actually wasn?t in the restaurant, but had arranged for the wine in advance of our meal.

How did Dallas know we would end up at Taverna?? After all, he had given us several recommendations.? I suspect if I were to ask Dallas, I would discover there was a bottle of wine waiting for us at each of the three locations, just in case we selected that particular restaurant.? Knowing Dallas, he probably covered all his bases in an effort to provide an extraordinary experience.

What I do know is this: either before or after our class that day, Dallas had driven over to Taverna, arranged for the wine, left his business card, and driven back to the hotel for class.? He cared enough about doing something special for us that he went well above and beyond ordinary customer service, and into the realms of extraordinary client care.

For many years now I?ve traveled around teaching classes, often in locations where I have clients ? or students I?ve been in front of multiple times.? Never has someone gone to this length to do something special for me.

If Dallas Green treats his coach like this, what kind of care do you think he delivers to clients?? I suspect it?s extraordinary, just like Dallas himself.

What kind of extraordinary client care have you delivered to clients?? Let me know ? I always love hearing about someone who has gone above and beyond!

Secondly, employers can use keylogger for Mac to monitor the progress and productivity of employees. Moreover, some manufacturers advertise keylogger for Mac as a form of backup, keeping each page you write even if the power goes out.

Did Caravaggio meet a grisly end - with the Vatican's complicity?

Citing documents from the Vatican Secret Archives, an Italian historian argues that 17th-century documents reveal Renaissance artist Caravaggio was assassinated by the Knights of Malta.

In one of his most graphic paintings, the rabble-rousing Renaissance artist Caravaggio?depicted his tortured face on the head of Goliath, slain and decapitated by the boy warrior David.

An Italian historian thinks that Caravaggio may have met just such a grisly end ? at the hands of the Knights of St. John of Malta, the chivalric order founded during the Crusades.

Vincenzo Pacelli, a Caravaggio expert from the University of Naples, has unearthed documents from the Vatican Secret Archives and state archives in Rome that suggest the Knights ordered the artist to be assassinated in revenge for him attacking and wounding on one of their members during a brawl.

They then dumped his body in the sea at Palo, north of Rome, which would explain why there are no documents recording his death.

Until now, conventional wisdom said Caravaggio died either from an illness or lead poisoning from the oil paints he used.

The murder was ?commissioned and organized? by the Knights of Malta and carried out with the complicity of the Vatican, Mr. Pacelli says in his forthcoming book, "Caravaggio ? Between Art and Science."

The historian found strange discrepancies in correspondence between Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a powerful Vatican secretary of state, and Deodato Gentile, a papal ambassador, in which the painter?s place of death was cited as the island of Procida near Naples, ?a place that Caravaggio had nothing to do with,? according to Pacelli.

A document written by Caravaggio?s doctor and first biographer claimed that the painter died at the age of 38 north of Rome, but the place name was later scrubbed out and replaced by the name of a town in Tuscany.?Pacelli also found an account written 20 years after Caravaggio?s death in which an Italian archivist wrote that the artist had been ?assassinated.?

He believes it all adds up to evidence of an assassination plot by the Knights of Malta which was then covered up.

Not all experts are convinced by the new theory.?John T. Spike, a Caravaggio expert at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., is skeptical of the idea that the painter was murdered on the Knights' orders.

?The problem with the theory is that the Knights had ample opportunities to kill him sooner ? either when he was living in Malta, or when he then went to Sicily, which is very close,? says Mr. Spike. ?Why did they wait so long??

The academic sparring will continue, but more than four centuries after his death in 1610, the true fate of Caravaggio remains an enigma.

France: Syria regime finances halved by sanctions

PARIS (AP) ? International sanctions targeting Syria's repressive regime have depleted its financial reserves by half ? and Damascus is actively trying to evade them, the French foreign minister said Tuesday.

Alain Juppe called for a solid international response to such Syrian "maneuvers" as he opened a Paris meeting of some 57 countries including Arab League states to reinforce sanctions against President Bashar Assad.

The actual size of Syria's foreign currency reserves isn't known, but it was believed to be around $17 billion at the start of the uprising in March 2011. Juppe didn't specify how much of Syria's finances were impacted by sanctions, but said "our information" is that they have been cut in half.

Juppe said Syrian authorities "continue to actively seek alternate routes to get around these sanctions, others (countries) are more or less offering alternative deals. We must respond to these maneuvers."

Tuesday's closed-door talks between diplomats and finance ministry officials from the Arab world, the European Union, the U.S. and others ? under the "Friends of Syria" banner ? are meant to keep up pressure on Assad despite his commitment to a cease-fire plan laid out by special envoy Kofi Annan and aimed at ending 13 months of violence in Syria.

"Our meeting is in itself a message: the Syrian regime must understand that it cannot continue its repression with impunity, and refuse the political transition laid out under the Annan plan and expected by the Syrian people," Juppe said.

Two Arab League nations ? Syrian neighbors Iraq and Lebanon ? were not attending. They have said that enforcing sanctions with Syria is hard for them to carry out, according to diplomats.

Western diplomats say a string of EU, U.S. and other sanctions are affecting Assad by curbing Syria's ability to export oil and impede the ability of his cronies and relatives to do business abroad.

Europe has agreed to sanctions against Syria's oil sector ? depriving Damascus of the market for nearly 90 percent of its oil export revenues. The regime is losing about $400 million in revenues each month, or about $2 billion since November, French diplomats have said.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused unspecified foreign forces of trying to thwart Annan's plan by encouraging the opposition to continue fighting the government and trying to substitute the U.N. Security Council with unofficial groups like the Friends of Syria.

Syrian opposition members, meeting Tuesday in Moscow, say they have sensed a shift in Russia's stance on the conflict in their homeland and voiced hope that Russia will crank up pressure on Assad's regime.

Haytham Manna, the leader in exile of the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, said Russia has voiced support for democratic changes in Syria and believes the Syrians themselves should determine the country's future.

"The representatives of the Russian government aren't inclined to support the idea of preservation of the dictatorial regime," Manna told a news conference. "They are talking about the need for continuing democratic changes, and it's very important for us."

Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir, a spokesman for the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, said Russia's position has been changing over the past two months and "particularly fast over the past two weeks."

Syrian opposition members want Russia to apply its power to persuade Assad the Annan plan.

"Russia has all the necessary levers to apply pressure on Assad's government and help Annan's mission," Manna said.

Manna said that while the opposition was encouraged by the talks in Moscow, differences remain. Russia continues to be strongly critical of Assad opponents using force, Manna said, while the opposition views it as a legitimate response to the violence on the part of the regime.

He said that the opposition delegation also sought to assuage Russia's concerns about the rise of Islamism in Syria and prospects of continuing violence in the country in case of regime change.

The opposition delegation is expected to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later Tuesday.

Lavrov has recently criticized Assad for dragging his feet on reforms and using excessive force. He and other Russian officials have strongly urged their old ally to observe Annan's plan.

Russia, along with China, has twice shielded Assad's regime from U.N. sanctions over its deadly crackdown on a popular uprising. But Moscow has strongly supported Annan's cease-fire plan to end 13 months of violence and begin talks on Syria's political future.

Interface Financial Group's Construction Factoring Services Aids ...

?Construction industry cost inflation accelerated to 46.7 in March from 45.8 in the previous month?

BETHESDA, MD?(Marketwire?April 16, 2012)?According to The Interface Financial Group (IFG), reports that The Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers? index shows the March construction sector in declining activity levels. The rate of decline in construction activity slowed over the month of March, while new business was broadly unchanged. Cost inflation accelerated markedly last month, mainly due to higher fuel prices. IFG believes that this news reinforces the need for small businesses to engage in construction factoring services to survive and grow.

The index saw activity rising to 46.7 in March from 45.8 in the previous month, and a figure that is above 50 means activity grew, while below 50 means activity fell.

IFG?s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer George Shapiro said, ?Overall concerns are that this may lead to slower growth in the economy. However, as many small businesses are finding out, factoring is one solution that is a growing source of alternative funding.?
IFG offers invoice factoring services solutions that will enable an SME to sell its accounts receivable invoices to a third party at a discount in exchange for immediate cash within less than 24 hours. Unlike a loan, IFG factoring services are the purchase of financial assets, or receivables accounts. There are no upfront fees and no co-signers required. IFG has no minimum sales volume requirement, and professional fees are competitive because each client?s circumstances vary, which may have an impact on the fees charged.

Private label solutions include export factoring, providing factoring services for companies who export from the United States and Canada; P.O. Funding to finance purchase orders when a company receives a purchase order and needs to purchase supplies to fulfill the order; Construction Factoring; and Inventory Financing, a solution promoting a company?s growth by funding them when they must expand and purchase inventory.

IFG does not expect to buy 100 percent of a company?s receivables and professional rates are competitive. The program allows choices of invoices to be factored, enabling customers to retain most of their money, to spend the minimum fees, plus guarantee adequate cash flow.

About The Interface Financial Group (www.ifgnetwork.com)
The Interface Financial Group (IFG) is North America?s largest alternative funding source for small business, providing short-term financial resources, including invoice factoring (invoice discounting). The company serves clients in more than 30 industries in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland, and offers cross-border transaction facilities. With more than 140 offices across North America and over 39 years of experience, IFG provides innovative accounts receivable factoring services and solutions by offering short-term working capital to growing businesses. Single invoice factoring, or spot factoring, is an extremely fast way to turn receivables into cash.

IFG was founded in 1972 to provide short-term working capital to help small to medium-sized businesses grow. The IFG organization operates on a local level, providing clients with local knowledge and experience and business expertise in numerous diverse areas in addition to accounts receivable factoring, including accounting, finance, law, marketing and banking.

Specific inhibition of autophagy may represent a new concept for treatment of kidney cancer

Specific inhibition of autophagy may represent a new concept for treatment of kidney cancer

Monday, April 16, 2012

New research at the University of Cincinnati (UC) suggests that kidney cancer growth depends on autophagy, a complex process that can provide cells with nutrients from intracellular sources. Researchers say in certain circumstances autophagy can protect tumor cells from chemotherapy, allowing them to survive for long periods of time in a hidden, dormant, metastatic state.

In this newly published data, researchers identify two distinct autophagy regulated pathways downstream from the von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor gene, or VHL. This specific tumor suppressor is lost in the majority of renal cell carcinomas.

UC researchers report these findings in the April 16, 2012, issue of Cancer Cell.

Maria Czyzyk-Krzeska, MD, PHD, corresponding author of the study, says the discoveries could guide researchers to more effective treatment approaches for kidney cancer, particularly metastatic disease, based on knowledge of these specific autophagic processes. UC collaborators in this study include David Plas, PhD, assistant professor of cancer and cell biology, and Jarek Meller, PhD, associate professor of environmental health.

"VHL has emerged as a master controller of access to intracellular nutrients through autophagy and to extracellular nutrients through formation of blood vessels. Our work shows that there are different autophagic programs?pro-and anti-oncogenic. Drugs that inhibit the final stages of autophagy non-specifically, such as derivatives of chloroquine, may not be as beneficial as hoped," explains Czyzyk-Krzeska, a professor of cancer and cell biology at the UC College of Medicine and researcher with the UC Cancer Institute.

She says the challenge is to understand the molecular mechanisms of these diverse autophagic pathways and identify targets that are specific to the pro-oncogenic pathway but not affecting tumor-suppressing pathways.

"Current drugs for metastatic kidney cancer target angiogenesis?blocking the formation of blood vessels that feed the tumor?but they typically only increase survival by a matter of months," says Czyzyk-Krzeska. "We hope this new body of evidence can help pave a new path to more effective treatment options for this disease."

According to the American Cancer Society, incidence rates of kidney cancer are increasing steadily by 2 to 3 percent each year. The disease is curable when it is identified early and isolated to the kidney. Treatment options for metastatic disease are limited.

Nicki Minaj Is 'Fine As Hell' In 'Beez' Video, 2 Chainz Says

'She felt more free, I felt more free, that's how you can see the camaraderie in the video,' 2 Chainz tells MTV News of Nicki's 'Beez in the Trap' clip.

While filming the "Beez in the Trap" video, it was hard for 2 Chainz to ignore all of Nicki Minaj's assets. Luckily, Deuce is a professional.

"I was like, 'Damn my little sister fine as hell,'" 2 Chainz told MTV News after a taping of MTV2's upcoming game show "Hip Hop Squares." Tity Boi then broke down his relationship with the Harajuku Barbie, one that dates back to around 2008. "I've known Nicki for a minute; I met her on the I Am Music Tour, the first leg with Wayne. It was cool, we had a great relationship, we used to talk, trip out here and there."

The "Beez" clip was shot in a strip club and features a bikini-clad Minaj counting hundred stacks. By the time 2 Chainz gets to his verse, Nicki grinds alongside him in leopard-print cat suit that accentuates her much-fawned-over rump. 2 Chainz attributes Nicki's comfort while doing her naughty dance to the closed set. "When it's closed off, she felt more free, I felt more free, that's how you can see the camaraderie in the video and how we just kinda vibing with each other," he said.

As for Nicki, the MC just wanted to salute all of the dancers who supported her as she was performing in strip clubs at the beginning of her career. "When I see the strippers and all of that, they always show me love, so I wanted to kinda make a video around them," the reigning rap queen said. "I hit up Benny Boom like, 'Yo, I need a sexy video right now.' I knew 2 Chainz wasn't gonna be mad."

Deuce, who is preparing his solo debut Based on a T.R.U. Story for an August release on Def Jam, didn't get to see the video while it was being edited but was very pleased with the result. "I just knew I got a little dance in on her and I'm glad they used it," he said. "She's very talented and I support what she's doin'."

In other Nicki news, the Young Money star disappointed millions of fans when she deactivated her Twitter account on Sunday after feuding with a fansite for posting snippets from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded LP . "Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f--king bye," she wrote before vanishing from the social networking site.

Canon Cinema EOS C500 camera hands-on (video)

Image
The familiar EOS-1D C isn't the only Canon camera to make its public debut ahead of NAB. The Cinema EOS series welcomes a third model to the collection this week, with looks that nearly match last year's C300. Unlike that model, which you can already pick up through e-tailers and at specialty shops, the C500 has a long way to go before it gets a shipping nod -- it may not even make it to market in 2012. The $30,000 price tag may pose an even greater barrier to entry than its to-be-announced availability date, however, and may in need of some tweaking before it's ready to compete with already established models, like the much less expensive RED Scarlet. Like the 1D C, the C500 can shoot 4K video -- the most apparent upgrade from the $16,000 C300. To that end, boosting its price tag may be the only way for Canon to avoid cannibalizing that less-abled flavor, since many cinematographers would otherwise pay little attention to the C300, due in part to its 1080p-limited shooting capabilities.

It's been a few months since we've last seen Canon's first Cinema EOS model, but the C500 has a look and feel that seems to be only subtly different from the C300. It is noticeably heavier, likely due to the additional cooling gear on board to accommodate 4K shooting. Both flavors include dual CF card slots, which you'll only be able to use for snapping 1080p video -- 4K is fed to an external recorder through the dual 3G-SDI ports, which for obvious reasons you won't find on the C300. There's also a larger grip on board, now a permanent fixture on the C500, which should aid with bare-bones handheld shoots -- but if you're dropping 30 grand on a digital body, some sticks and a dolly shouldn't be far behind. Like its sibling, this year's model ships with either a Canon EOS or industry standard PL mount, so if you have a need for both, you'll need two cameras. Overall, you're looking at the same sleek, albeit slightly unconventional body design, with a price tag that's likely to make amateurs weep and pros run for the rental house. As always, there's a hands-on video waiting just past the break.
