Jeremy Evans Wins Slam Dunk Contest
ORLANDO, Fla. ? Utah's Jeremy Evans won the Slam Dunk Contest at the NBA's All-Star Saturday night festivities.
Evans, who got into the competition as a replacement for injured New York guard Iman Shumpert, earned 29 percent of 3 million text message votes cast by fans.
This was the first year that fans had total control of voting, a major tweak from past competitions.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? The superintendent of the West Virginia coal mine where an explosion killed 29 men was charged Wednesday with conspiracy to defraud the federal government, becoming the highest-ranking employee to face criminal prosecution in an investigation that appeared to be moving steadily up the corporate ladder.
Former Upper Big Branch mine boss Gary May, 43, of Bloomingrose, W.Va., is named in a federal information, a document that signals a defendant is cooperating with prosecutors. He is the second employee of Massey Energy, the company that owned the mine at the time of the 2010 tragedy, to face prosecution.
Reached at his home Wednesday morning, May declined comment. A conviction on the federal fraud charge could result in fines and up to five years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said his investigation of the worst U.S. mine disaster in four decades is "absolutely not" finished, signaling that officials are now exploring possible criminal charges against even higher-level executives of the company. Goodwin did not immediately comment further.
Although other mine disasters have led to criminal charges, they've typically targeted low-ranking employees and have largely been misdemeanor offenses.
"Usually, they get the mine foreman because that's the person that signs the books," said Gary Quarles, whose son Gary Wayne died in the explosion. Superintendents are usually shielded, he added.
But Quarles said the charge announced Wednesday suggest prosecutors are looking at May's bosses, too.
"It's about time," he said. "It's a good start."
Last week, Goodwin urged a federal judge in Beckley to make an example of the only other person charged so far, former security chief Hughie Elbert Stover. Goodwin is demanding the maximum possible sentence of 25 years in prison for actions he says contributed to the April 2010 disaster near Montcoal.
Stover is to be sentenced Feb. 29 for lying to federal investigators and attempting to destroy documents.
May began working at Upper Big Branch in February 2008 as a mine foreman and was promoted in October 2009 to superintendent. He held that post, overseeing three room-and-pillar mining sections and a longwall operation, until the day the mine exploded on April 5, 2010.
The information filed in U.S. District Court in Beckley accuses May of conspiring with others to conceal many dangers in the mine through an elaborate scheme that included code words to alert miners underground when inspectors were on the property, the deliberate alteration of approved ventilation plans and the deliberate disabling of a methane gas monitor on the continuous mining machine.
May allegedly ordered the wiring to be altered in February 2010 so the automatic shut-off mechanism was disabled, allowing the machine to function for several hours without a methane monitor.
Other employees of the mine have told investigators there was never enough fresh air to sweep out the highly explosive methane and coal dust that regularly accumulated ? the fuel that three separate investigations have concluded powered the chain-reaction blast.
The information also says that when May knew the Mine Safety and Health Administration was about to sample the level of breathable coal dust in a section of the mine, he surreptitiously redirected additional air to that area to obscure the typical conditions.
May is also accused of both falsifying safety inspection books and ordering someone not named in the information to leave out reports of deep water that would have made a section of the mine unsafe.
Clay Mullins worked at Upper Big Branch and lost his brother Rex in the blast, but didn't cross paths with May.

The newspaper also reported that Elysabeth Gyselbrecht told investigators that she went to Pierre Serry's home the day after her husband's disappearance and confronted him.
"Do you have something to do with the disappearance of my husband?" she told investigators she asked Serry, the paper reported. To which Serry is reported to have replied, "No."
The discovery of the body, buried, accompanied by the presence of a police crane in the area, seemed to suggest, however, that the police had received specific information about the location. That only heightened media interest in the case. Two journalists were detained after entering the area that had been cordoned off by police.
And interest in the case seemed likely to grow. As La Capitale newspaper opined in a news article on Saturday, "Despite the discovery of the body, the story seems far from being explained."

"There's a far shorter peak earnings period [in sports] than in any other profession," money manager Michael Seymour told Sports Illustrated in 2009. "In many cases they lack the time and desire to understand and monitor their investments."
The average span of an NFL career, for example, is just three years, meaning second chances to make up for early mistakes are few and far between. And boy are there mistakes. Athletes have been known to sink millions into conspicuous consumption, make failed investments, waste money lavishing their friends and family, as well as get sunk by child support and divorce payments.

Once made only from wood, woods now consist of a variety of things like steel, wood and titanium. They have a rather broad head and a longer shaft than irons, which adds speed to the ball.
More and more people have started golfing as a casual activity, anxious to have a good game without practicing for hours on a weekly basis with a myriad of different equipment. As a result, other types of clubs fill the space where neither irons nor woods are appropriate for casual golfers. Utility, rescue and hybrid clubs are accepted at most golf courses. The shape of the club?s head usually allows classification as a wood or an iron, if a definition is necessary, and the USGA addresses the issue in its book of rules.
One reason hybrid clubs are so popular is that amateur golfers are not able to effectively use some of the larger, heavier clubs that are often necessary to make a great shot. Hybrids, as the name implies, are a cross between a fairway wood and an iron. The compact heads make them easier to use than the iron clubs, resulting in the airborne shot needed for distance. There is more control over shots with a hybrid, as the shaft is shorter than that found on a wood club. When a person is comfortable with the swing and gets a great result from the shot, clubs like the hybrid will continue to be popular.
A golf bag full of clubs gives the impression of many choices and that is correct. A rule of thumb for golfers is to limit the number of clubs used during a round of golf to fourteen or less. A favorite club will generally be found in a bag, in addition to a set of irons, driver, putter, sand wedge and a couple of fairway woods.
Hybrid clubs, allowed on so many fairways, are replacing some of the heavier irons. Hybrids, available in sets or for individual purchase, make it easier to achieve loft without the player tiring out before the game is over. It is easy to see that once players find the clubs that provide a better game, golf often becomes their favorite pastime.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? The stocky man showed up in a basketball uniform for a game at Century High School in North Dakota. Players and coaches assumed he was a fan who had come with another team, so nobody objected when he began to pitch in around the bench.
"He helped lay out uniforms, got water. He even gave a couple of kids shoulder massages. Creepy stuff like that," said Jim Haussler, activities director for the Bismarck Public School District.
After the game was over, the man joined the winning team on the court and asked if he could get a piggyback ride. One bemused player gave it to him.
"He makes himself appear as if he's limited or handicapped. I think he plays an empathy card, so to speak," Haussler said. "We didn't realize what we were dealing with until several days later."
What they were dealing with the night of Feb. 4 was the Piggyback Bandit ? Sherwin Shayegan of Bothell, Wash., a 28-year-old man who ingratiates himself with high school sports teams, then hoists his 5-foot-8, 240-pound frame onto the backs of the student athletes.
Shayegan's antics stretch back to 2008 and had been mainly confined to Washington and Oregon. But since last fall, he has worked his way east to Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota, leaving a trail of befuddled athletes in his wake.
Shayegan has asked for piggybacks, attempted to pay for piggybacks and just sprung one upon an unsuspecting kid. He favors basketball games, but he also has leapt onto hockey, soccer and football players.
He has pretended to interview athletes for a term paper, acted as a team manager or just tried to blend in with the crowd for a piggyback payoff.
Why he does it is unclear, as is who came up with the "Piggyback Bandit" nickname that now follows him wherever he goes. Shayegan, contacted on his cellphone Tuesday, politely declined to speak of the piggyback rides until he could talk to an attorney.
"I'd prefer not to comment, if that's OK," he said.
Shayegan has a lengthy criminal rapsheet in Washington as well as nine outstanding warrants in one town in that state. Because of his piggyback antics, he has been banned from high school sporting events in Washington, Oregon, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota.
"What's disturbing to me is that he is jumping on our young athletes, he is 240 pounds, and he can hurt someone," said Mark Beckman, executive director of the Montana High School Sports Association.
In October, Shayegan was arrested in Helena, Mont., for jumping on two unsuspecting high school soccer players during a state tournament.
Shayegan said something to a motel clerk in Helena that day that prompted the clerk to call police. A plainclothes officer went to the tournament and watched Shayegan jump on the back of a player.
Shayegan pleaded guilty on Feb. 1 to two misdemeanor assault charges. He was fined $730, given a 360-day suspended prison sentence and told not to go to any more Montana high school events.
"Go back to Seattle and behave," Judge Bob Wood told him, according to the Independent Record of Helena.
Shayegan didn't listen. Just three days later, he struck again at the Bismarck basketball game. He also received a piggyback ride from a hockey player after a hockey game that same day.
That one-day spree led to Shayegan being banned from sporting events by North Dakota High School Activities Association executive secretary Sherman Sylling.
Later that week, Shayegan turned up at three basketball games in Minnesota, including the only college game where his appearance has been noted, St. Olaf versus Concordia. At that Feb. 8 game, Shayegan sat near the St. Olaf bench. Like the Bismarck game, it was assumed he had come with the other team.
"I think at one point he was giving water to individuals," said Mike Ludwig, St. Olaf's sports information director.
But he kept getting too close to the players, making one coach uneasy. Someone told Shayegan to back off, and he did, Ludwig said.
There were no piggybacks that night, nor were there any when he later appeared at high school events in St. Cloud and Minneapolis. The Minnesota State High School League joined the other states in banning him, with executive director David Stead writing that Shayegan "Is known to cause a direct threat to the health and safety of student athletes and others."
Police believe Shayegan may have gone back to western Washington, where he has 16 convictions dating back to 2004 that include multiple counts of criminal trespass, vehicle prowling, resisting arrest and a felony possession of controlled substance without a prescription.
The western Washington town of Mount Vernon has nine outstanding warrants for his arrest, mostly for failing to appear in court or not showing up for work crews as part of a sentence for an earlier conviction. Police in the nearby city of Anacortes have issued a bulletin asking anyone who sees or contacts him to call 911 immediately.
Little is publicly available about Shayegan's background other than his arrest record. Phone numbers listed for relatives rang unanswered, and messages left were unreturned.
One person who has known Shayegan for several years is Mike Colbrese, the executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Colbrese said he became acquainted with Shayegan about seven years ago, when Shayegan was a common fixture at games and used to ask for work as a waterboy in state high school basketball tournaments.
"He would just wander around. You wouldn't see him interacting with coaches and players when we were first aware of him," Colbrese said.
Nobody knew where he lived or what he did, Colbrese said. Eventually, he was viewed as an eccentric nuisance who generally bothered staff for jerseys or for a role at games.
Things changed in 2008, when Joel E. Ferris High School of Spokane won that year's state basketball tournament and Colbrese spotted Shayegan hanging around the locker room after the game.
"He was jumping on players' backs after they showered and came out of the locker room," Colbrese said.
Washington high school sports officials stopped viewing him as an eccentric and started looking at him as a possible threat. For the past two years, there have been no reports of Shayegan at Washington high school games.
Colbrese said he is bothered by what appears to be Shayegan's progressively aggressive behavior in recent months and warned officials in other states not to be fooled by his act.
"He's certainly socially awkward in any social setting. But he's also not afraid to approach people. It doesn't take very long to find out he's a little bit different," Colbrese said. "What people don't realize is that he's very smart. He knows how to play the system. He just knows what to say and how to say it."
