'It's all about the money': Heading to oil jobs in North Dakota

Time profiles people who have migrated to North Dakota looking for work.

"The car business beat me around a lot and I got laid off and knew someone out here so I gave him a call and he was looking for some help," says Craig Bitter in the video documentary.

"It's all about the money. It's the only reason people come out here, I am pretty sure. I think if they say something else they are lying."

North Dakota has America's lowest unemployment rate. ABout 30,000 workers are employed in the oil and gas fields, a six-fold increase over eight years.

Woman's fatal fall from Six Flags coaster probed

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? A woman who died while riding a 14-story roller coaster at Six Flags amusement park in North Texas apparently fell from the ride, police said.

Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster ? dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world ? but did not give specifics of what happened.

"We are committed to determining the cause of this tragic accident and will utilize every resource throughout this process," Parker said in a statement Saturday. "It would be a disservice to the family to speculate regarding what transpired."

Arlington Police Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press that police believe the woman fell from the ride at the Six Flags Over Texas park. He added that there appears to have been no foul play.

Cook also said police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. He said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was not immediately identified by authorities.

The amusement park and the Texas Department of Insurance, which approves amusement rides and ensures they are inspected, are further investigating the accident, Cook said.

Carmen Brown told The Dallas Morning News that she was waiting in line to get on the Texas Giant and witnessed the woman being strapped in ? and then what ensued.

"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," Brown, of Arlington, told the newspaper.

Six Flags said the ride would be closed while the investigation continues.

At 14 stories high, the Texas Giant has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. It first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster and underwent a $10 million renovation to install steel-hybrid rails and reopened in 2011.

Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 and was the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas. The park's first fatality occurred in 1999. A 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water.

There were 1,204 ride-related injuries reported in the United States in 2011 ? about 4.3 for every million visitors ? according to the National Safety Council's most recent data. Of those, 61 were deemed serious, the March 2013 report said, and roller coasters accounted for 405 injuries.

Fatalities were not listed in the report, which was prepared for Alexandria, Va.-based International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Also, only 144 of the 383 amusement facilities with rides in the United States responded to the survey.

A 2005 report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated just over four people died annually on amusement rides from 1987 to 2002. The estimate includes both mobile amusement park rides and fixed-site rides.

Report: NSA bugged European Union offices, computer networks

By Annika Breidthardt and Ben Deighton, Reuters

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The United States has bugged European Union offices and gained access to EU internal computer networks, according to secret documents cited in a German magazine on Saturday, the latest in a series of exposures of alleged U.S. spy programs.

Der Spiegel quoted from a September 2010 "top secret" U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) document that it said fugitive former NSA contractor Edward Snowden had taken with him, and the weekly's journalists had seen in part.

The document outlines how the NSA bugged offices and spied on EU internal computer networks in Washington and at the United Nations, not only listening to conversations and phone calls but also gaining access to documents and emails.

The document explicitly called the EU a "target".

A spokesman for the Office of the U.S. Director of National Intelligence had no comment on the Der Spiegel story.

Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, said that if the report was correct, it would have a "severe impact" on relations between the EU and the United States.

"On behalf of the European Parliament, I demand full clarification and require further information speedily from the U.S. authorities with regard to these allegations," he said in an emailed statement.

American fugitive Edward Snowden has taken his low profile to a new level. A week ago he landed Sheremetyevo Airport's transit zone to take refuge, and no one has spotted him since. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn told Der Spiegel: "If these reports are true, it's disgusting.

"The United States would be better off monitoring its secret services rather than its allies. We must get a guarantee from the very highest level now that this stops immediately."

Snowden's disclosures in foreign media about U.S. surveillance programs have ignited a political furor in the United States and abroad over the balance between privacy rights and national security.

According to Der Spiegel, the NSA also targeted telecommunications at the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, home to the European Council, the collective of EU national governments.

Without citing sources, the magazine reported that more than five years ago security officers at the EU had noticed several missed calls and traced them to NSA offices within the NATO compound in Brussels.

Each EU member state has rooms in Justus Lipsius with phone and internet connections, which ministers can use.

Snowden, a U.S. citizen, fled the United States to Hong Kong in May, a few weeks before the publication in the Guardian and the Washington Post of details he provided about secret U.S. government surveillance of internet and phone traffic.

Snowden, 30, has been holed up in a Moscow airport transit area since last weekend. The leftist government of Ecuador is reviewing his request for asylum.

Reuters contributed to this report.

SKorea says NKorea fires 3 short-range missiles

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea fired three short-range guided missiles into its eastern waters on Saturday, a South Korean official said. It routinely tests such missiles, but the latest launches came during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing tensions.

The North fired two missiles Saturday morning and another in the afternoon, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said by phone. He said the North's intent was unclear. His ministry said it is watching North Korea carefully in case it conducts a provocation against South Korea.

In March, North Korea launched what appeared to be two KN-02 missiles off its east coast. Experts believe the country is trying to improve the range and accuracy of its arsenal.

North Korea recently withdrew two mid-range "Musudan" missiles believed to be capable of reaching Guam after moving them to its east coast earlier this year, U.S. officials said. The North is banned from testing ballistic missiles under U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Earlier this year, North Korea threatened nuclear strikes on Seoul and Washington because of annual U.S.-South Korean military drills and U.N. sanctions imposed over its third nuclear test in February. The drills ended late last month. This past month, the U.S. and South Korea ended another round of naval drills involving a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier off the east coast. North Korea calls such drills preparation to invade the North.

Analysts say the recent North Korean threats were partly an attempt to push Washington to agree to disarmament-for-aid talks.

In response to Saturday's missile test, the U.S. said threats or provocations will only further isolate North Korea from the rest of the world and undermine international efforts to bring peace and stability to Northeast Asia.

"We continue to urge the North Korean leadership to heed President Obama's call to choose the path of peace and come into compliance with its international obligations," said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.

This past week, Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy on North Korea, ended trips to South Korea, China and Japan. On Friday, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned from North Korea but didn't immediately give details of his talks with officials there.

On Monday, North Korean state media showed that the country's hard-line defense minister had been replaced by a little-known army general. Outside analysts said it was part of leader Kim Jong Un's efforts to tighten his grip on the powerful military after his father Kim Jong Il died in December 2011.

The United States and Japan are participants in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks along with North and South Korea, Russia and China. North Korea walked out of the talks in 2009 after the United Nations condemned it for a long-range rocket launch.

North Korea possesses an array of missiles. U.S. and South Korean officials do not believe the North's claim that it has developed nuclear warheads small enough to place on a missile. Last week in Washington, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and President Barack Obama warned North Korea against further nuclear provocations.

Tension between the two Koreas remains high after both sides pulled out their workers from a jointly run factory complex earlier this year. The countries remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty.

Why blogging matters to business - Blogging Tips

Running an online business? Then you need blogs as one of the arrows in your internet marketing quiver. There?s no better way to portray your business in a good way to both prospects and repeat customers alike. Following are a few of the best reasons why you can?t afford to ignore this tool and hope to achieve online success.

A blog helps you keep in touch with your customers

Promote on Your BlogThis technique has a lot going for it. Blogs are informal when they?re done right because that?s the tone most often used in business advertising, but beyond that they?re easy to maintain. With any one of the popular open source formats today like WordPress, you can change the text as often as you like and even shift around the entire look of the blog by changing the template. You need to be approachable to be successful in today?s market and that means taking advantage of the flexibility that blogs can provide. You can cater the tone to specific markets or even subsections of the same group and be alternately conversational or serious and academic as the situation dictates.

A blog provides a voice for your business

Image is everything in business and that applies on the Internet just as much as it did in the old brick and mortar days. With a blog, you can manage a business image much more effectively than with other mediums. For example, you can use a blog to tell potential clients about the company culture and even use the text to help clients get more familiar with the personal goings on in the business they might not otherwise see. Remember, this is the medium that can be updated more easily than traditional websites.

?Blogs can even act as your only web presence

Starting out in business can be a costly affair and many small businesses want to keep an eye on costs when they?re first getting underway. Blogs are a cheap way of getting the word out on the goods and services you?ve got to sell. They work very well when combined with seo and a website, but can also be very effective as a stand alone internet marketing technique.

Blogs are also flexible. They can act like a newsletter, ebrochure, or in a number of other capacities. It doesn?t matter they way you choose to use them, having blogs as part of your business arsenal will increase your exposure and online sales.

Obama meets Arab Americans ahead of Mideast trip

(AP) ? Just days ahead of his Mideast trip, President Barack Obama on Monday met with about 10 leaders of Arab American groups who encouraged him to deliver a message of hope to the Palestinian people even if he is unable to immediately deliver a peace plan with Israel.

Obama met with the officials Monday, four days after meeting with Jewish leaders as part of his preparation for the visit.

The White House has not publicly announced the dates for the trip. Israeli news media have reported Obama will arrive on March 20. Obama will also make stops in Ramallah and Jordan.

In a statement, participants said they offered Obama "recommendations for the vital message that he should convey to the Palestinian people."

Jim Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute and one of the participants, said Obama would not have the opportunity to make a speech to the Palestinian people.

"But there are opportunities for him to say things that get into the public discourse about America's commitment to them, about America's understanding of their situation," he said.

The meeting took place in the West Wing's Roosevelt Room, just steps away from the Oval Office. Participants said that in addition to Obama, members of his national security team and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett also participated.

One participant in the meeting, who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations, said he got the impression that Obama was treating his Mideast visit as an "exploratory trip." He said both sides emphasized the need for follow-up after the trip to ensure momentum doesn't fade away.

Warren David, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said he left with a "bittersweet feeling."

"But more sweet than bitter, more optimism," David said. "Many, many Arab-Americans are disappointed. Many voted for the president ? more than ever before ? because they felt this president would move the peace process forward."

Zogby added: "I personally don't expect that he's going to come back with a formula to make everything go away, but the conversation begins and we want to be part of that conversation. Bringing us in was an important start."

In his meeting last week with Jewish leaders, Obama downplayed expectations for the trip, saying he did not intend to deliver "grand peace plan." But according to one participant in that session, Obama said he could still initiate such an effort in coming months.

In their joint statement Monday, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the American Federation of Ramallah Palestine, the American Task Force for Palestine and the Arab American Institute said, "The United States, through sustained, balanced, constructive engagement, can facilitate a peaceful, lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-a resolution that is essential to long-term security in the Middle East."

Largest-ever Mardi Gras float has a little hiccup

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? In a city known for overindulgence, maybe the largest-ever Mardi Gras float was a little too much.

The 330-foot long super float built by the Krewe of Endymion had to be separated in half to make a turn during its parade Saturday. New Orleans Police Officer Shelton Carr says the float was separated and then re-attached so it could continue to roll.

The turn was only a minor hiccup. The parade actually finished its route ahead of schedule.

The float ended its journey at the Superdome, where thousands of revelers were decked out in black tie attire. It was the first major event at the venue since the Super Bowl power blackout.

The multimillion-dollar float holds more than 200 riders. The parade's celebrity grand marshal was Kelly Clarkson.

Military autopsies: What new findings reveal about heart disease

Newer research shows U.S. servicemen who were autopsied showed signs of heart disease that researchers say highlights an ongoing need to help prevent the disease, beginning early in life. The surprise is that even 27 year olds were found tohave severe coronary heart disease.

The finding, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), December 26, 2012, found an 8.5% prevalence of coronary artery disease in servicemen autopsied between 2001 and 2011.

The study, conducted by Bryant J. Webber, M.D., of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md., and colleagues included all U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn.

Severe heart disease found in young service members

The researchers classified heart disease findings as mild, moderate or severe. Severe coronary atherosclerosis was present in 2.3 percent of service members; moderate in 4.7 percent, and minimal in 1.5 percent.

Severe atherosclerosis was defined as 50% or more narrowing of the arteries that supply blood flow to the heart.

As expected, high blood pressure and cholesterol in addition to obesity was associated with a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Other factors linked to heart disease among service members whose average age was just 26 included lower education level and higher body mass index upon entrance into the military.

Even though the findings show heart disease prevalence is on the decline compared to what was discovered from military service member studies from the Korean and Viet Nam wars, there is still a need for further improvement.

Prevention of coronary artery disease has to start early

The authors write: "Military and civilian health care systems should continue to help patients reduce their cardiovascular risk factors, beginning in childhood and continuing throughout adult life. Despite remarkable progress in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and other developed nations, and even small improvements in the prevalence of smoking and other risk factors may reduce death rates further and prolong healthy lives."

Studies show children can develop risk factors for heart disease as early as age 5. One such finding showed 5 to 17 year olds have at least one risk factor for coronary artery disease. One of the largest risks cited is increased rates of childhood obesity.

In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests children receive at least one cholesterol screening blood test before age 21 in recommendations that also drew some criticism.

They also recommended if dietary and lifestyle changes fail to lower lipid levels after six months, children over age 10 should be placed on statin drugs ? anti-cholesterol prescription medications.

Weight loss, smoking cessation, consuming a Mediterranean or primarily plant based diet with plenty of fresh food, avoiding excess salt, keeping stress levels manageable (perhaps by changing your perspective) and regular daily physical activity are all known and proven interventions for the whole family that can ensure a longer and healthier life.

Heart disease leads to major disability, produces a heavy financial burden on our health care system and on individuals and leads to the need for medications that can have adverse side effects and are also costly.

What you can do

It?s also important to know you really can reverse existing coronary artery disease. Dean Ornish who is a pioneer has a program that ? only if you?re serious ? can help turn your life around. His program is proven to reverse even severe forms of coronary heart disease without drugs or surgery.

You might even consider the Ornish diet, which was ranked #1 by U.S. News & World Report for the past two years. His program is offered at hospitals throughout the U.S. and is covered by Medicare.

The autopsy finding from young service member autopsies supports the notion that heart disease is a progressive disease that starts in childhood and highlights the need for strong public health messages that can curb the incidence of heart attack, stroke and other types of cardiovascular disease that kills 600,000 people in the United States each year. The good news is it's possible to reverse heart disease and plenty of tools to tap into if you're motivated.
