Facebook stock has highest close since May 21

NEW YORK (AP) -- Facebook closes at one of its highest prices since its initial public offering.

The stock rose $1.21, or 3.8 percent, to finish Friday at $33.05. It hasn't closed above that price since May 21, the second day of trading.

The stock finished the week up 10 percent, the second straight week of increase.

Facebook is still 14 percent below its IPO price of $38 a share.

Facebook's IPO has had a rocky ride. Its debut was delayed by trading glitches on the Nasdaq.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to increase revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

Facebook, along with investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of dozens of shareholder lawsuits.

Space Plane: X-37B Video Shows Air Force Craft's Robotic Landing

The U.S. Air Force's robotic X-37B space plane came back to Earth today (June 16) after 15 months in orbit on a mystery mission, and its much-anticipated landing was caught on video.

The X-37B spacecraft touched down at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base at 5:48 a.m. local time Saturday (8:48 a.m. EDT; 1248 GMT). Several hours later, Vandenberg officials released a short video of the event.

The first part of the 80-second video was apparently shot in infrared light. It shows the X-37B space plane cruising in for an automated landing, its belly and nose glowing a bright orange-yellow, presumably from the heat generated during re-entry to Earth's atmosphere.

The X-37B, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle-2 (OTV-2), launched on March 5, 2011, from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Its flight was the second-ever mission for the X-37B program; the first was flown by OTV-2's sister ship, OTV-1.

OTV-1 blasted off in April 2010 and stayed aloft for 225 days, well below the supposed 270-day orbital limit for the space plane. But OTV-2 smashed that limit, zipping around our planet for 469 days before finally coming down today.

Just what OTV-2 was doing up there for so long remains a mystery. Details of the vehicle's mission are classified, as are its payloads. The secrecy has spurred speculation ? notably from China ? that the X-37B may be a space weapon of some sort, but Air Force officials have long insisted that the spacecraft is simply testing out technologies for future satellites.

The X-37B looks like NASA's recently retired space shuttle, but it's far smaller. The X-37B is 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed. For comparison, two X-37B vehicles could fit inside the payload bay of a space shuttle.?

The 11,000-pound (5,000-kilogram) space plane's orbital longevity is enabled by its solar array, which generates power after deploying from the payload bay.

The X-37B is built by Boeing, though NASA originally used the vehicle as an experimental test bed until funding for the project ran out in 2004. The space plane then passed to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and it was ultimately turned over to the Air Force in 2006.

Hidden vitamin in milk yields remarkable health benefits

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2012) ? A novel form of vitamin B3 found in milk in small quantities produces remarkable health benefits in mice when high doses are administered, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The findings, recently reported in the June 2012 issue of the journal, Cell Metabolism, reveal that high doses of the vitamin precursor, nicotinamide riboside (NR) -- a cousin of niacin -- prevent obesity in mice that are fed a fatty diet, and also increase muscle performance, improve energy expenditure and prevent diabetes development, all without side effects.

The Swiss researchers, led by Dr. Johan Auwerx, performed the mouse experiments, while the ability to give the animals sufficient doses of NR was made possible by Weill Cornell Medical College researchers, who played key roles in uncovering the biological story of NR.

"This study is very important. It shows that in animals, the use of NR offers the health benefits of a low-calorie diet and exercise -- without doing either one," says Dr. Anthony Sauve, associate professor of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Sauve is the pharmacologist and organic chemist who has invented a simple method for efficiently synthesizing NR in large scale. He was first to show that NR increases nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels in mammalian cells. NAD is a central player in energy metabolism. He has pioneered research into the compound, and he is a leader in investigating how NAD can signal adaptation in cells and in physiology.

"The research also suggests that the effects of NR could be even broader," Dr. Sauve says. "The bottom line is that NR improves the function of mitochondria, the cell's energy factories. Mitochondrial decline is the hallmark of many diseases associated with aging, such as cancer and neurodegeneration, and NR supplementation boosts mitochondrial functioning."

The Swiss researchers call NR a "hidden vitamin" that is believed to also be present in many other foods, although levels are low and difficult to measure. Nevertheless, the effects of NR on metabolism "are nothing short of astonishing."

Got nicotinamide riboside?

The study depended on a series of crucial discoveries by Dr. Sauve and his laboratory colleagues.

NR, related to niacin and other common forms of vitamin B3, was first investigated more than 60 years ago by a Stanford researcher and 1959 Nobel Laureate, Arthur Kornberg. But little more was known about its effects in mammals until Dr. Sauve discovered the effect NR had in stimulating levels of NAD in mammalian cells -- work he published in 2007.

NAD allows sugars, fats, and proteins to be converted into energy. Dr. Sauve's research provided the first evidence that NR enhances NAD levels in the mitochondria in mammalian cells in culture. These findings are published in the current study. These cell-based observations were key to the demonstration that NR could stimulate tissue NAD levels in animals, and that it could stimulate NAD-dependent sirtuins, which adapt physiology to the low calorie diets that are known to extend the lifespan of many organisms.

Dr. Sauve invented a relatively simple method for efficiently synthesizing NR in large scale so that its health benefits can be studied. This methodology, which makes it possible to make NR commercially available, was patented by Cornell's Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization and subsequently licensed to ChromaDex Corporation.

The development of a means to synthesize NR in adequate quantities was crucial to the current research, and the Sauve lab provided methods and NR to make the study possible. In addition, the biological observations on the effects of NR on NAD levels in cells and on mitochondria were key to the study. Finally, the Sauve laboratory has developed state of the art analytical methods to determine NAD levels in cells, tissues and organelles, and the laboratory provided several key metabolic measurements highlighted in the study.

"Our published scientific work has verified that NR is perhaps the most potent NAD enhancing agent ever identified," he says. His laboratory is also widely recognized for developing an expertise in the measurement of NAD metabolism in cell tissues.

With this compound, the Swiss researchers found that mice on a high-fat diet supplemented with NR gained significantly less weight (60 percent) than mice fed the same diet without NR, even though the mice supplemented with NR ate the same amount of food as mice on the high fat diet not treated with NR. They had improved energy. They were in better shape than the untreated mice, with significantly better endurance and stronger muscles. Additionally, none of the treated mice developed diabetes, as seen in the untreated mice on the high fat diet. And when fed a normal diet, NR treated mice had improved sensitivity to insulin. The NR treated mice also showed lower cholesterol levels. All of these benefits came without toxicity.

While the new study demonstrates that high doses of NR can largely prevent the negative health consequences of a poor diet in mice, Dr. Sauve stresses that the effects of high doses of the vitamin in humans have not been evaluated. "It is important to keep in mind that the amount of NR in milk and other foods appears to be small. We don't know what effects NR would have in humans at relatively high doses," he says.

"Still, we have very encouraging evidence of benefits of NR and NAD augmentation in general from this animal study -- and much more work to do," he says.

The study's senior investigator Dr. Auwerx is head of Laboratory of Integrative Systems Physiology at the Polytechnic School in Lausanne (?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne or EPFL) and the first author is Dr. Carles Cant?, also of EPFL.

Anthony Robles is used to overcoming challenges. The man was born with one leg, and still won a Division I NCAA wrestling championship. It's not surprising to hear that the challenge of MMA holds interest for the Arizona State grad and motivational speaker.

"It's a possibility. Right now, I'm focused on my speaking career, but when I'm in Arizona, I'm wrestling and I'm learning jiu-jitsu," Robles told Cagewriter. "I'm having fun with it. I would always get the fight question when I wrestled in college, I would say, well, if they ever make a 125-lb. weight class in MMA, I'd be there. They just made it."

The UFC's recent addition of flyweights opens the door for Robles, but in the meantime, he has plenty on his plate. He is working on a book, movie rights and this week, he's in New York with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a group that supports the endeavors of physically challenged athletes. He likes getting to meet other athletes like him because of the way they see each other.

"To ourselves, we're not disabled. We're not handicapped. We're just out there doing the best with what we have, and we're going to do everything we can to beat whoever comes across our paths. Just to be in the same room as these other competitors now, they get that mindset. We have that bond, of us showing the world what we're capable of."

Amazon's Cloud Player app just made its way to the iPhone and iPod touch, but the company's web-based music service still lacks the license deals that make Apple's iCloud a more seamless experience. While iCloud scans a user's hard drive to match songs and stream them from iTunes, Cloud Player requires listeners to manually upload copies of their music to the cloud. According to CNET's "industry sources," Amazon is looking to close that gap by inking agreements with major labels and has already made deals with EMI and Universal Music Group. This story is still very much in the rumor phase, but obtaining those licenses certainly sounds like a logical step for a service meant to make enjoying files across several devices easier.

AIRING: Obama campaign says its ad buy is in the $10 million range, airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

KEY IMAGES: "It started like this," says a narrator over an image of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney from his 2002 campaign for governor of Massachusetts. "I speak the language of business," Romney says. "I know how jobs are created."

Says a narrator: "But it ended like this: One of the worst economic records in the country." To back that up, the ad says Massachusetts lost 40,000 manufacturing jobs, a rate twice the national average, while the state fell to 47th in job creation.

The ad includes images of empty plants, a vacant office and a Boston Globe opinion article with the highlighted words "Romney's economic record one of the worst in the country." It says instead of hiring workers from his own state, Romney outsourced call-center jobs to India, cut taxes for millionaires like himself while raising them on the middle class and left the state $2.6 billion deeper in debt.

It concludes: "So now, when Mitt Romney talks about what he'd do as president ... remember, we've heard it all before," the narrator says. "Romney economics: It didn't work then, and it won't work now."

ANALYSIS: Obama's re-election campaign wants to undercut Romney's central pitch to voters that his background as a businessman and governor makes him more qualified to fix the economy. The ad to be aired in several battleground states aims to build off previous attacks by the Obama camp on Romney's record as a venture capitalist at Bain Capital, and follows an uptick in the nation's unemployment rate, a fresh challenge for Obama as he seeks a second term.

But the new ad doesn't tell the full story about Romney's record. Governors generally have limited influence on creating jobs, given the broad economic forces at work.

The ad's claim that Massachusetts under Romney's leadership lost 40,000 manufacturing jobs, twice the national average, is backed up by federal labor statistics. So is the claim that the state was 47th in job creation. But there's more to it than that.

Massachusetts already was losing jobs when Romney took over as governor in 2003, but the trend was reversed during his tenure. Unemployment dropped from 5.6 percent to 4.7 percent during his governorship.

The claim that Romney outsourced call center jobs to India instead of hiring Massachusetts workers is based on Romney's veto of a budget provision that would have barred overseas outsourcing by vendors doing business with the state. The ad's claim that Romney cut taxes for millionaires like himself while raising them on the middle class also lacks some key background. It's true that Romney signed a bill approved by the Democratic-run Legislature repealing a retroactive capital gains tax hike and sending out about $275 million in tax rebates. But the change had been ordered by the state's top court to fix a problem left over from before Romney took office. The Legislature had approved a capital gains tax increase to start in May 2002, and the court ruled that it was unconstitutional to create a new tax midway through the year.

While he did not raise the state's income or sales taxes, Romney and Democratic lawmakers raised hundreds of millions of dollars in new and higher fees on everything from marriage licenses to real estate transactions that cost many middle-class families.

The ad's claim that Romney left the state $2.6 billion deeper in debt is based on figures from the state treasurer about the state's long-term debt for capital improvements.

Michael Widmer, president of the nonpartisan Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, a business-backed fiscal watchdog group, said it is not unusual for long-term debt to grow. The state usually spends about $1.5 billion to $2 billion annually on capital projects such as highways and schools, he said.

Long-term debt is different from the state's operating budget, which by law must be balanced each year. The capital budget gets paid through debt service, a line item in the state's annual budget.
