Kindles, Nooks and other E-readers catch flack for threatening the future of printed books. But reading itself may get a boost from the devices. For example, a study of struggling students found that the kids felt better about reading after a course in which they used Amazon Kindles. For two months, 199 middle-schoolers in a reading improvement class in Texas had 15-to-25 minutes every day when they were free to read on the Kindle. In general, the students felt the device improved their reading ability. And they tended to enjoy using an e-reader.

They noted the ease of carrying multiple books in one device, and the feeling that reading was suddenly a high-tech 21st century activity rather than a boring waste of time. And some low-level readers who might otherwise be embarrassed to be seen with a simple book liked keeping their peers in the dark about what title they were reading. In the old days, one had to use a fake book-cover to achieve that level of secrecy.

Iraq says nothing new from Arab summit on Syria

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq's foreign minister says this week's Arab summit in Baghdad will issue a resolution on Syria that offers "nothing new" but will complement international efforts to end the conflict there.

Hoshyar Zebari told a news conference after a meeting of Arab foreign ministers Wednesday that a "marriage" between Arab and international proposals on Syria was likely to force the Syrian regime and its opponents to implement peace plans.

The ministers are offering recommendations on Syria for the Arab heads of state meeting Thursday. These, according to a draft copy obtained by The Associated Press, include calling on President Bashar Assad to implement a cease-fire and let in humanitarian aid. Zebari said the summit will not ask Assad to step down.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Arab countries, divided over how to stop Syria's bloodshed, plan to call for the Syrian regime to halt its crackdown on civilians, let in humanitarian groups and free detainees, according to recommendations Wednesday by foreign ministers preparing for a summit this week.

Even before Arab heads of state began their Thursday summit in the Iraqi capital, Syria sharply rejected any measures they take. A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdessi, said Damascus would "not deal with any initiative" that might come out of the 22-member Arab League.

The rejection reflected Damascus' refusal to work with the League after the pan-Arab body suspended Syria's membership as punishment for the bloody crackdown on protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar Assad. The U.N. says that over the past year, more than 9,000 people have been killed in the violence.

Arab countries are divided over how aggressively to intervene in Syria's turmoil. Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are believed to want to start providing weapons to Syria's rebels and even carve out a "safe area" inside the country that the opposition can use as a staging ground.

Iraq, the host of this week's summit, is more cautious. Baghdad's Shiite-dominated government is close to Iran, Assad's closest ally, and is wary of hurting those ties. On Wednesday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told Arab foreign ministers gathered in Baghdad that his country rejects foreign intervention in Syria but supports what he called the aspirations of the Syrian people.

"We stress our full support to the aspirations and legitimate demands of the Syrian people to freedom and democracy and their right to determine their future, choose their leaders and the peaceful transition for power," said Zebari, a Kurd.

Zebari sounded more assertive at a news conference, saying Iraq "could no longer remain neutral" in the face of the violence in Syria, its neighbor.

He also said that the Syria crisis was headed toward "internationalization," maintaining that the Arab League already has done all it could to resolve the conflict.

Assad's regime on Tuesday announced its acceptance of an initiative by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan calling for a cease-fire. However, violence continued with clashes between government forces and armed rebels. Syria's opposition is deeply skeptical that Assad will carry out the terms of the peace plan.

Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday were working out recommendations for the heads of state to approve when they meet here Thursday. According to draft recommendations obtained by The Associated Press, the summit would call on Assad to implement a cease-fire, let in humanitarian aid and release all those detained the past year. It also demands he allow peaceful protests, withdraw army troops from urban centers and implement previous Arab League proposals to end the conflict.

Speaking before Zebari, Libya's foreign minister, Ashour Ben Khayil, was much more forceful about the conflict in Syria.

"We witness the tragedy of our brothers in beloved Syria who have, for more than a year, face a tyrannical and harsh regime. Regrettably, the world stands by, unable to take decisive action," he said. "What we witness every day across Syria is genocide ... against a people whose only sin is that they demanded freedom and dignity."

Libya, where longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was ousted and killed last year, hosted the last Arab summit, in 2010. Last year's Arab Spring upheavals led to the canceling of the summit, meant to be held in Iraq.

Opposition members accuse Assad of agreeing to Annan's plan to stall for time as his troops make a renewed push to kill off bastions of dissent.

"We are not sure if it's political maneuvering or a sincere act," said Louay Safi, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council. "We have no trust in the current regime. ... We have to see that they have stopped killing civilians."

Annan's plan calls on Damascus to immediately stop troop movements and use of heavy weapons in populated areas and to commit to a daily two-hour halt in fighting to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

Gulf Arab nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been pushing behind the scenes for more assertive action to end the Syria conflict. Privately, they see little benefit in the Arab League's efforts to reach a peaceful settlement and prefer instead to see a small core of nations pooling together to act on their own.

Among the options they are considering are arming the Syrian rebels and creating a safe haven for the opposition alongside the Turkish-Syrian border to serve as a humanitarian sphere or staging ground for anti-regime forces.

The Sunni-led Gulf countries are hoping that by forcing Assad's fall, they can pull Sunni-majority Syria out of its alliance with Iran and break the belt of Tehran's influence that stretches through Iraq and Syria to the Mediterranean.

A Sunni-ruled Syria would give the U.S.-allied Gulf Arabs a significant victory in their long-running power struggle with non-Arab, mainly Shiite Iran.

In a sign of their cool ties with Baghdad's Shiite leadership, most ? perhaps all ? rulers of the Gulf nations were likely to stay away from the summit and send lower-level officials. Jordan's King Abdullah, also a Sunni, is not attending, sending his prime minister in his place, the government announced.

In a possible breakthrough in Iraq's relations with Bahrain, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met on the sidelines of Wednesday's meeting with Bahrain's foreign minister, Sheik Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

No details emerged from their meeting.

Relations have been tense since Iraqi politicians publicly criticized last year's crackdown by Bahrain's Sunni-led regime against the nation's Shiite majority.

Shiite-ruled Iraq is hosting the summit to show that it has emerged from years of turmoil and American occupation. But a massive security operation in Baghdad mirrors fears that Sunni militants could try and disrupt the meetings.

Central Baghdad was virtually deserted on Wednesday, with hundreds of heavily armed troops and policemen deployed in full combat gear. The summit venue is a palace once used by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and is located inside the "Green Zone," a highly secure area on the west bank of the Tigris River where the Iraqi prime minister's office and the U.S. and the British embassies are also located.

"Iraq does not search for a role or seek a role," Zebari said in defense of the $500 million cost of preparing for the Arab summit. "Iraq's history is carved in history."

And if the next customer was completely different from me, that salesperson would have a rationale for why that same car was the perfect match for them as well.

In fact, I?m sure that salesperson would have a rationale for almost anyone as to why that was the perfect car for them. After all, he only has one model to sell, so he has to convince you that this is the model for you to buy. Even if it is really not the car for you.

Beware of the salesperson with only one choice.

THE ANALOGY
Although car dealers have lots of models to try to sell you, there are many businesses which have only one or two items to sell. Included in that second list is often many business gurus and consultants.

Often times, they have had success with a particular business approach in the past. They?ve probably written a book about it. Now they want to use that same approach at your business. They are like the car salesman with only one car to sell. They will try to convince you that their approach is just right for you. They will point out their prior successes to ?prove? that you should do it, too. After all, it is the only thing they have to sell, so sell it they will?regardless of who you are.

Of course, the problem is that businesses are a lot like people. They aren?t all alike. Just as there is no one-size-fits-all automobile, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to business strategy.

There?s a reason why car dealerships have a variety of models to sell. Not everyone needs or wants the same thing. And all businesses should not need or want the same strategic solution.

Beware the business consultant with only one choice.

THE PRINCIPLE
The principle here is that there is no one best strategic solution for everyone. And that?s a good thing. After all, if there was only one strategic solution, then you would only need one company within an industry?the one operating that one strategy best. Everyone else would be an inferior redundancy. And if you are not that one company, then there would be no reason for your company to exist.

Fortunately, the variety within the marketplace allows for a variety of go-to-market strategies. This provides viable options for lots of participants.

Start With the Right Question
So, to begin the strategy quest, be sure to start with the right question. The wrong first question to ask is ?What is the best strategy?? That?s a bad question because there is no best strategy. Just as there is no one best car for everyone, there is no one best strategy for all businesses.

The right strategy for a small entrepreneur may be very different from the best strategy for a huge Fortune 100 multinational firm. They have different resources, different strengths, different capabilities. Forcing them to take the same approach to achieve the same ends would be a mistake.

Instead, the right first question to ask is ?What is the best strategy for my business?? The point is that who you are is just as important as what you do. There must be a fit between the two. Until you understand who you are in relation to the marketplace, you don?t know what moves make the most sense for your business.

Strategies are about finding places where you can win. If you are short, you will not win at basketball, no matter how successful basketball may be for tall people. You need to find the sport where your talents have the best chance of winning.

So if a business consultant comes in saying ?I have the best strategy solution,? tell that consultant they are answering the wrong question.

Judge a Salesperson by their Questions
How can you tell if a business consultant is answering the right question? Check to see if their opening moves are more about telling or more about asking. If they immediately start out by telling you what must be done, this probably means that they have a preconceived notion of what is best and they are going to shove it down your throats whether it is appropriate or not (like the car dealer with only one car).

By contrast, if they start out by asking a lot of questions about your business and your company, then they realize that the best solution depends on how it fits with who you are. Therefore, they need to ask you a lot of questions about who you are in order determine the best solution for you.

This is what a good consumer-centric car salesperson will do. They will ask you a lot of questions, like how you plan to use the vehicle, what are critical concerns, etc. Only after they first understand your situation will they begin to make a recommendation.

Beware of ?Proof by Example?
The one-solution consultant will often try to impress you with how superior their solution is via examples. They show how others used this process to great success. Therefore, it should work for you, too.

But here is the problem with examples. Yes, you can find examples of businesses which succeeded with a particular approach. But if you look long enough, you can find examples of companies which failed with that same approach. In addition, you can find examples of successes and failures for all of the approaches. Consequently, an example of a success by one company with a particular approach does not guarantee that you will have a similar success with that approach. And it doesn?t prove that you wouldn?t have even more success with an alternative approach.

That is why in the US, the law requires that advertisements for weight loss products must put a disclaimer on their examples and say that not everyone will lose as much weight as those shown in the examples. Otherwise, the examples can be deceptive.

I remember reading about a company which had an inferior product that most customers didn?t like. They received lots of complaints. However, one day they got a letter from a satisfied customer (their first ever). They used that one satisfied customer in their advertising, and sales rose dramatically (even though the product was still bad). Yes, it was an example of success. But it was not a fair representation of reality.

So beware of blindly accepting examples as proof of future success. Ask yourself how similar your situation is to the one in the example. Check to see if there have been failures. Find out what the differences were between the successes and the failures.

Leaders Aren?t Imitators
Finally, there is the concept of ?first mover advantage.? The principle is that those who stake an early claim to a strategic position tend to have an advantage over late-comers. Early participants have a better opportunity to claim ownership of the position in the consumers? mind, because the consumer has no preconceived leader already in their head. These early arrivers easily claim the customers looking for this position at a time when there is less competition.

By the time the late-comers arrive, customers are already satisfied with the early arrivals. The customers now already have a firm leader in their mind (one of the early arrivals) who owns the space. The late-comer has to work harder to steal away well-entrenched market share. As a result, the early arriver tends to be more successful.

If the business consultant is proposing an approach which succeeded in the past, that success may have been a result of first mover advantage. Others following in their path will be late arrivers and not see the same advantages. Therefore, the approach may not work as well anymore. I spoke more about this concept here.

If you want success, that often requires staking out new claims in new territories with new business models. And this won?t happen if you are always trying to imitate successes of the past. If you imitate the leader, then you will always be a follower. And followers rarely have the advantage. So beware of consultants who want you to blindly follow old rules and will not take risks to be innovative with you.

SUMMARY
Strategic planning is a very personal thing. The right strategy depends on the particular company and their particular situation. It is not a one-size-fits-all process. Therefore, it can be a mistake to just pull a strategy ?off the shelf? which worked for others and expect it to work for your firm. If you call in a strategy consultant to help you with your strategy, make sure they understand this principle. Become very nervous if the consultant has a preconceived notion about a single approach that they want to force on every client.

Venus Williams rallies for win at Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Weary winner Venus Williams stood near the net swatting souvenir balls to cheering fans, but a marathon match had taken its toll, and one of her attempts didn't even reach the stands.

Williams had already expended all her energy, erasing a match point and outlasting Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) in Sunday's third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.

Her career comeback now includes a come-from-behind win. Williams is playing in her first tournament since withdrawing from the U.S. Open last August after being diagnosed with a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease.

The three-set victory was her second in less than 48 hours, and took nearly three hours.

"I just kept coming back," Williams said. "I tried not to let anything discourage me."

Other winners included Rafael Nadal, bidding for his first Key Biscayne title, and two-time champion Victoria Azarenka. American John Isner was eliminated.

Wozniak served for the match at 5-4 in the final set, but dumped a forehand in the net when she had a match point. Talking later about the situation, Williams claimed to be unaware Wozniak had been so close to victory.

"She had match point?" Williams said. "Oh no. Thank God I'm oblivious to the score a lot of times."

The tiebreaker swung Williams' way when she smacked an overhead that clipped the net cord before landing softly for a winner and a 4-2 lead. On the final point, she somehow found the strength to whack a 119-mph service winner.

"That's the serve I wanted ? just a big one to hopefully force the issue," Williams said. "Thank God it went in. Wow."

She'll need to recover quickly for a fourth-round match Monday night against No. 15-seeded Ana Ivanovic, who beat No. 20 Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Nadal, seeded No. 2, defeated 33-year-old Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-2 and has lost only six games in two rounds.

"Good, solid start of the tournament," Nadal said. "Two good matches, comfortable wins."

The No. 10-seeded Isner, coming off a runner-up finish at Indian Wells a week ago, lost to No. 19 Florian Mayer, 6-4, 6-2. No. 4 Andy Murray, the 2009 champion, advanced in a walkover when Milos Raonic withdrew because of a sprained right ankle.

The top-ranked Azarenka improved to 25-0 this year by beating wild card Heather Watson 6-0, 6-2.

On a sweltering spring afternoon, Williams looked lethargic at the outset, struggled with an erratic forehand and kept falling behind. She played with straps on her right ankle and right calf, and often seemed a step late to the ball.

"Wake up, Venus!" a fan shouted in the second set. Younger sister Serena, who plays her fourth-round match Monday, watched solemnly from the club section of the stadium.

"I didn't feel that great, and I was kind of starting to panic," Venus said. "I needed to calm down and try to figure out a strategy that was going to work a little better than what I was doing at the moment."

She managed to pull even after two sets, then fell behind 4-2 in the third set and looked increasingly weary. During one changeover she hung her head for 15 seconds before slowly lifting it to take sips from two drink bottles.

Wozniak looked fresher, but the wild card from Canada couldn't serve out the match. Instead, the opportunity unnerved her. She hit consecutive double-faults and committed unforced errors on the game's final three points, which made it 5-all.

Play continued for another half hour before another match point, this one held by Williams. After her service winner clinched the victory, she managed to raise both fists and muster a smile.

A former No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams is ranked No. 134 and needed a wild card to enter the tournament. She's trying to improve her ranking enough in the coming weeks to qualify for the London Olympics.

"Whenever things look bleak, I think about the Olympics," Williams said. "That keeps me motivated."

For example, if you were to contribute $5,000 a year to a tax advantaged account like an IRA or 401k and assume an 8% compound interest rate of return for 30 years, your bank account would be worth $561,416 at the end of year 30. If you made the same investment in a non-tax sheltered environment (a fully taxable account), assuming a 28% tax rate, it would be worth $373,985 instead of $561,416. This is a whopping difference of $187,431. As you can see, in the graph below, the effect of taxes on your savings can be dramatic.

C. Tax Deductions ? Certain IRAs and 401ks allow you to reduce your taxable income today while saving for your future. I thought of a workaround.
First I created a copy of one of my trees that is working ok, renamed it to blank and deleted all the individuals except the home person, I then imported another tree (that would not work on Custom Reports) I then deleted the original home person and pointed to the new home person in the imported file, I then renamed the tree, THE CUSTOM REPORT NOW WORKS OK.

Somewhere in your community today, an elder person is wondering when she?ll be able to take her medicine today, or have a chance to see the sun. And her mind will be put at ease once her aide arrives to help her get dressed, eat breakfast or take a walk in the park. For millions of aging households, a home care worker is the only person who provides the day-to-day assistance and emotional interaction they need to function. Yet, typically, that worker is neglected herself?by the government.

Workers caring for our greying population are intimately woven into our family lives, but are alienated from essential labor protections?though that could change soon. As we?ve reported previously, a longstanding loophole in the Fair Labor Standards Act excludes home care or ?companionship? workers from minimum wage and time-and-a-half overtime regulations. Nationwide, about 2.5 million home care and personal assistance aides?projected to grow to about 3.8 million by 2020?work around the clock to help their clients handle the basics of life, while often themselves scraping by on poverty wages.

Back in the early 1970s, Rep. Shirley Chisholm called attention to the plight of home-based workers who had been shut out of regular labor standards. A generation later, workers? rights advocates are pushing the Labor Department to follow through on a proposed rule change to extend federal minimum wage and overtime protections to currently excluded home care workers?who are disproportionately female and of color.

According to the National Employment Law Project:

The annual income for a home care worker employed for 40 hours per week at the 2009 median wage of $9.34 an hour for the industry was just $20,283?far below a basic self-sufficiency income for a single adult, let alone someone supporting a family as many home care workers do.

State laws offer only incomplete protections for these aides. As the need for community-based health services expands and the healthcare affordability crisis strains state and family budgets, advocates say time is running out to create a sustainable home care workforce.

Obama urges N. Korea to "pursue peace"

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? In a direct challenge to North Korean leaders, President Barack Obama implored them "to have the courage to pursue peace" while warning of the wrath of the world if they don't. Failure, he said, would mean a future without dignity, respect or hope for its people.

Obama stood by his pledge for a globe without nuclear weapons, declaring flatly that the United States has more than it needs and can cut its arsenal without weakening its security or that of its allies. That assessment put him on a collision course with congressional Republicans who say any significant cuts would undermine the U.S. ability to deter aggression.

In unusually personal terms, Obama said he spoke of his wish for further nuclear reductions as the president of the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, as a commander whose country's nuclear codes are never far from his side, and as a protective father eager to erase the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Obama and other world leaders are in Seoul for a major international nuclear security summit. Obama plans to meet on the sidelines of the summit with several heads of government, including Russian and Chinese leaders.

Obama spoke most directly to North Korea's leaders, saying the internationally isolated country needs to change its ways because continuing down the same path will lead to "more broken dreams" and "more isolation." His blunt remarks came a day after he visited the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea and described the experience as akin to witnessing a "time warp" of despair.

"By now it should be clear," he said. "Your provocations and pursuit of nuclear weapons have not achieved the security you seek, they have undermined it. Instead of the dignity you desire, you are more isolated."

The nuclear summit unfolded as North Korea prepared for an announced satellite launch next month that the United States says amounts to a test of its rocketry.

As Obama spoke of peace, tensions rose in the Korean peninsula. Seoul warned it might shoot down the North Korean rocket if it violates South Korean territory.

Speaking at Hankuk University, Obama said that the international community has made progress in reducing the threat of nuclear material but says "we're under no illusions."

"Even as we have more work to do, we can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need," he said. "I firmly believe that we can ensure the security of the United States and our allies, maintain a strong deterrent against any threat, and still pursue further reductions in our nuclear arsenal."

Obama also reiterated his warning to Iran, which the U.S. and its allies contend is defying its international obligations by pursuing an illicit nuclear program. Obama said he would discuss Iran in meetings later in the day with the leaders of Russia and China.

"Iran's leaders must understand that there is no escaping the choice before it. Iran must act with the seriousness and sense of urgency that this moment demands," Obama said. "Iran must meet its obligations."

Facing down Iran and North Korea, Obama said a "new international norm" was emerging to deal with the two nations' intransigence. "Treaties are binding. Rules will be enforced. And violations will have consequences," Obama said. "Because we refuse to consign ourselves to a future where more and more regimes possess the world's most deadly weapons."

Obama said the U.S. was also moving forward with Russia to eliminate enough plutonium for about 17,000 nuclear weapons and turn it into electricity. And he heralded an earlier agreement with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals under the New START Treaty, which Obama called "the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades."

"When we're done, we'll have cut American and Russian deployed nuclear warheads to their lowest levels since the 1950s," he said.

Obama also prodded Russia in a new way, saying he would seek discussions with Moscow on an unprecedented front: reducing not only strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve. He said he planned to discuss that proposition with Putin when they meet in May.

Obama was to meet later Monday with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Former leader Vladimir Putin returns to the presidency later this spring after winning an election held earlier this year.
