Syria uprising puts Hezbollah on defensive

In this Sunday, July 15, 2012 photo, Sheik Ahmad Assir, a hardline Sunni cleric, speaks in an interview with The Associated Press at his protest camp in the southern port city of Sidon, Lebanon. Assir has set up the camp in the middle of a key road in Sidon, declaring it an uprising against Hezbollah's weapons. Assir is taking aim at Hezbollah at a vulnerable time for the group when it faces the possible downfall of its crucial ally, President Bashar Assad in Syria. Assir may not be a direct threat to Hezbollah, but the willingness to publicly confront it underlines the dangers the group faces as it tries to retain the power and influence it has built up over the past 30 years in the face of the Syria crisis. (AP) ? On a main road connecting the Lebanese capital with the south, Sheik Ahmad Assir kneels under a blazing sun to pray and then sits down with supporters at his anti-Hezbollah protest camp and launches into a new tirade against Lebanon's most powerful and well-armed force.

"By God, Nasrallah, I will not let you sleep at night," he vows in a fiery speech, addressing Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.

Few in Lebanon have dared take on the Shiite militant group in such a public way, but Assir, a hardline Sunni cleric, senses weakness. He sees a chance to push back against Hezbollah's domination of the country's politics.

The growing popularity among some Sunnis of the previously little known local cleric is a sign of how vulnerable Hezbollah has become as it faces the possibility of the downfall of its crucial ally, President Bashar Assad in Syria. Its reputation as a popular resistance movement has already taken a severe beating for siding with Syria against the anti-Assad uprising even after it supported Arab revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain.

"This is the start of what will become Lebanon's Tahrir Square," Assir, wearing a long robe and white skullcap, told The Associated Press at his protest site, where some 150 Sunni conservative supporters have been camped out for some three weeks. "They have humiliated us for long enough. It's about our dignity now. I can't live like this, it's enough."

"May you triumph over the Party of the Devil!" came a shout of support to Assir from one bearded protester, who traveled from the northern, Sunni-dominated city of Tripoli to join in. He used a play on Hezbollah's name, Arabic for Party of God.

Assad's fall would be a nightmare scenario for Hezbollah. Any Sunni-led new regime would likely be far less friendly to the group, or even outright hostile. Regime change in Syria could heavily damage its ally's political clout in Lebanon and knock out a third of the "Iran-Syria-Hezbollah" axis of "resistance" to Israel.

Iran remains Hezbollah's most important patron, but Syria is a crucial supply route. Without it, Hezbollah will struggle to get money and weapons as easily.

Nasrallah admitted how crucial the alliance with Damascus is in a speech Wednesday night after Assad's regime suffered its hardest blow yet in the conflict ? a bomb blast that killed three major regime figures, including the defense minister and Assad's brother-in-law.

Nasrallah called the Syrian regime a "bridge" and a "critical support" for Hezbollah's "resistance" against Israel.

"The most important weapons with which we fought Israel in the July war came from Syria," he said, in reference to Hezbollah's monthlong 2006 war with Israel.

In the face of the Syria crisis, Hezbollah is treading carefully to retain the power it has built up over the past 30 years in Lebanon, a deeply divided country where its strength is resented by Sunnis and some in the Christian community.

The group's main strategy for doing so appears to be to lay low and avoid aggravating the volatile fault line between the Sunni and Shiite communities, which each make up about a third of Lebanon's population of 4 million.

Lebanon's sectarian tensions have already been worsened by the crisis in Syria, where the overwhelmingly Sunni opposition is struggling to oust a regime dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Regional shifts also weigh on Hezbollah. The so-called Arab Spring sweeping the Middle East has so far led to the rise of conservative Sunni Islamists deeply resentful of Shiite powerhouse Iran and its allies Syria and Hezbollah.

"Hezbollah has accepted that this is going to be a protracted crisis in Syria and by virtue of that, the group has been much readier to calibrate and reduce its footprint," said Aram Nerguizian, a visiting fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Over the course of Syria's 16-month-old uprising, he and other analysts have noted a subtle shift in Hezbollah's public position. Early on, Nasrallah embraced Assad, casting him as a reformer in speeches that infuriated Syrian protesters. He has since then somewhat modified his stance, calling on both sides to cease the violence and engage in dialogue.

Assir's rapid rise and growing following are symptoms of the deep frustration among Lebanon's Sunnis who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendancy to power in Lebanon.

The 44-year-old, bespectacled, skinny cleric with a long bushy beard was previously little known, a preacher at the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque in Sidon. Now he is openly challenging and taunting Hezbollah like few have dared before, even taking aim at Nasrallah, a revered figure usually considered a red line in Lebanon.

Assir calls his protest camp an "uprising" against Hezbollah's weapons, aimed at bringing the powerful arsenal of the group's guerrilla force under the control of the government. Hezbollah, the country's strongest armed force, has resisted pressure to do so for years.

Assir set up the camp blocking a main road in the southern coastal city of Sidon. The city is the gateway to Hezbollah's traditional stronghold in the south and links the group's command center in Beirut's southern suburbs with front line villages in the south.

Sunni bitterness still runs deep over clashes in May 2008, when Hezbollah gunmen swept through Sunni neighborhoods in Beirut after the pro-Western government of that time tried to dismantle the group's crucial telecommunications network. More than 80 people were killed in those clashes.

Moreover, a U.N.-backed special tribunal has accused four Hezbollah members in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, Lebanon's most powerful Sunni leader. Hezbollah says the tribunal is a tool of Israel and the West.

Hezbollah still is Lebanon's single most influential player with considerable support among Shiites and unprecedented political clout. It holds a dominant role in Beirut's government and the prime minister is an ally, after the fall of the previous government sidelined Hezbollah's opponents, the U.S.- and Western-backed factions led by Hariri's son Saad. As a result, its extensive arsenal of weapons and rockets is virtually untouchable for the moment.

Hezbollah has not directly commented on Assir's tirades and has gone into great lengths to rein in members who might clash with his supporters.

Their reaction has also been muted to the abduction of 11 Shiite pilgrims in May by rebels in Syria who demanded Nasrallah apologize for pro-Assad comments. The kidnapping is seen as an attempt to draw Hezbollah retaliation,

"Hezbollah knows it's absolutely not in its interest to have a civil war in Lebanon," said political analyst Abdelwahab Badrakhan, writing in the Lebanese daily An-Nahar. Hezbollah and Iran's main goal is to preserve the political cover to ensure the group's hold on its weapons and freedom to operate.

Nerguizian said a new conflict in Lebanon could erupt if Hezbollah doesn't agree to a new formula to share power with its rivals. "The Shiites have to deal with the reality of what happens to a minority group when it takes on too much and doesn't share enough," he said.

At the camp in Sidon, Assir has a hero status among the protesters.

Maysa Sabbagh ? a 27-year-old who like other women at the camp was covered from head to toe in black, only a small slit revealing her brown eyes ? said she was once an admirer of Hezbollah for its fight against Israel but grew disillusioned when the party when it turned its guns on other Lebanese in 2008.

"Sheik Assir is speaking for all of us," she said, a Blackberry in her hand and an iPad perched on her lap. Assir "says what others do not dare say."

IRS Bogarts Medical Marijuana Pharmacy's Deductions, Drives Founder Into Bankruptcy

Marijuana Following up on my earlier post:? Forbes: Owner of Nation's First Marijuana Pharmacy Now Broke and Fighting IRS, by Janet Novack:

Lynnette M. Shaw, the colorful pot activist who opened the first licensed medical marijuana dispensary in the United States, is fighting an IRS bill for $1.27 million in back income taxes and penalties and has filed for personal bankruptcy, listing $276,000 in state sales taxes among her debts.

Shaw was forced to shut her Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Fairfax, Ca. late last year, after U.S. Attorney for Northern California Melinda Haag wrote a letter to her landlord threatening to seize the building that housed her operation. The letter was part of a coordinated crackdown by four U.S. Attorneys in California on marijuana dispensaries. ...

Shaw?s personal income tax troubles stem from an IRS decision to deny business expense deductions to marijuana dispensaries under a provision Congress passed in 1982 (? 280E) that disallows deductions for ?trafficking in controlled substances? as ?prohibited by Federal law or the law of any State in which such trade or business is conducted.? Surprisingly, Shaw never incorporated the dispensary?as either a for-profit or not-for-profit corporation. Instead, she ran it as a sole-proprietorship, reporting its $1 million plus in annual sales and all its expenses on Schedule C of her individual 1040 tax return.

Shaw?s previously unreported lawsuit filed in U.S. Tax Court late last month, shows that rather than reporting profits, she reported losses totaling $186,826 in 2008 and 2009. After denying all her expenses for everything from cannabis to utilities, IRS auditors calculated Shaw had taxable income of $2.83 million for those years. This past March it sent her a bill for $1.27 million n back taxes and penalties, plus an as yet uncalculated amount of interest. Shaw says she owes nothing. (Harborside, which is incorporated, has reportedly been hit with a $2.5 million IRS bill; according to the U.S. Tax Court docket, it filed suit challenging the assessment in December.)

Shaw?s suit argues that the IRS is ignoring state laws legalizing medical marijuana as well as a 2007 U.S. Tax Court decision (Californians Helping To Alleviate Medical Problems, Inc.) that was decided largely in favor of another, now closed, marijuana dispensary. In the CHAMP case, the IRS conceded that 280E doesn?t preclude deducting the cost of goods sold (i.e. the cost of the cannabis). The court also ruled that CHAMP could deduct the cost of providing extensive counseling and caregiving services to its members, although not the cost of actually distributing the marijuana.

Felix, Merritt make noise at US track trials

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Allyson Felix might be grabbing all the attention at the U.S. Olympic trials. She isn't the only one peaking there, however.

Moments before Felix won the 200-meter sprint in a personal-best 21.69 seconds Saturday night, Aries Merritt also notched his lowest mark, winning the 110 hurdles in a world-best 12.93 seconds to earn his spot in London.

Wearing bright yellow socks that blurred with each stride, Felix finished well ahead of Carmelita Jeter in 22.11 and Sanya Richards-Ross in 22.22.

In the 110 hurdles, Jason Richardson, the reigning world champion, was second in 12.98 and Jeffrey Porter finished third in 13.08 to round out the U.S. team.

The seventh day of the Olympic trials at Hayward Field started with Trevor Barron's American record of 1 hour, 23 minutes in the 20,000-meter race walk.

But still hanging over the event was last weekend's third-place tie in the women's 100 meters, and it put all the attention on the 200.

Felix and training partner Jeneba Tarmoh finished the 100 in a dead heat that caught U.S. track officials off-guard with no policy in place to resolve it.

USA track and field announced a tiebreaking procedure the next day, but Bobby Kersee, coach of both women, said he wanted to wait until after Saturday's 200 to decide how to break the tie, either by a runoff, coin flip, or if one athlete concedes.

A decision was expected Sunday morning, the final day of the trials.

Because the top three finishers in each event make the Olympic team, USATF wanted the issue resolved by Sunday night. But the U.S. Olympic Committee has a Tuesday deadline for naming the team.

Tarmoh finished fifth in the 200, the day's final competition, and didn't earn a spot.

"I guess it was all about fighting to make the team," Felix said. "It's emotional to try and make the team after putting in all the hours and work on the track. I wanted to leave it all out on the track today."

Dancing in the pit after each clearance, Chaunte Lowe earned her fifth national outdoor title in the high jump. She won at 6 feet, 7 inches.

Brigetta Barrett finished second after successfully clearing 6-7, a personal best, and veteran Amy Acuff was third at 6-4 3/4 for the other two spots on the team for the London Games. It will be Acuff's fifth Olympics.

Acuff said she was burned out after Beijing in 2008. But after he daughter was born two years ago, the 37-year-old decided to try to make one more team.

"Deep down I felt like I had unfinished business. That's ultimately what motivates me to come back," she said. "I was fourth place in Athens. You always want another shot at it."

Lowe broke the meet record of 6-6 1/2 set by Louise Ritter in 1988.

Hyleas Fountain won her fifth national title in the heptathlon, finishing with 6,419 points. Sharon Day was second with 6,343 points and Chante McMillan finished third with 6,188.

Fountain won the silver medal in Beijing, becoming the only the second American woman to earn an Olympic medal in the event after Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

"I didn't really have any pressure out here. I knew that if I didn't do anything too crazy, I could go out there and make the team," Fountain said.

Reigning world champion Christian Taylor won the triple jump with a leap of 57-10 1/4. Former Florida teammate Will Claye, who finished third at the world championships last year, also earned a spot on the team as the runner-up at 57-7. Third-place finisher Walter Davis did not have the Olympic "A'' standard to make the team.

Jason Richardson set the tone in the 110-meter hurdles by running his semifinal in 12.98 seconds, just off of the world-best time this year of 12.97 that China's Liu Xiang ran in May.

Richardson said he's the 13th person to go under 13 seconds, so he's getting a tattoo to commemorate moment.

"It's an amazing feeling," he said.

But Merritt, arms akimbo, pushed at the finish for the win over Richardson in the final. Richardson finished in 12:98.

Merritt's previous best in the event was 13.03, which he ran this spring.

"I had a great start and I'm a build hurdler ? I get faster as I go," Merritt said. "I fulfilled my dream today."

The women's 200 was easily the most anticipated event of the day. With the tiebreaker debacle as a backdrop, Felix never looked back to check the competition. She didn't need too: Her broad smile at the finish showed that she was well aware of what she'd done.

Felix's personal best before Saturday was 21.81.

"I was thrilled with my race," the six-time U.S. champion said. "I feel like everything came together."

Jeter won the disputed 100 meters last Saturday, and Richards-Ross claimed victory earlier in the week with a meet-record in the 400.

The day, which was drizzly and chilly, started with 19-year-old Barron breaking the race walk record of 1:23:40.00 set by his coach, Tim Seaman, in 2000. Barron also broke the meet record of 1:25:40.00, set by Seaman in 2004.

Seaman, a two-time Olympian, finished second in 1:27:29.48 and Nick Christie was third in 1:29:47.30, but neither made the team because they did not have the Olympic standard 1:22:30 this season.

Did anyone loose Google Voice after apply ICS leak?

Hey everyone.

So, I got a voicemail today, and when I looked at it the icon told me to call *86. Which is what you call for vzw voicemail. I haven't used vzw's voicemail in over 2 years since moving over to Google Voice. Well, it seems like I got kicked out of GV, and went back over to vzw VM. Even though in my call settings it says I'm using Google Voice.

I ended up having to deactivate GV voicemail, and then reactivate it.

Anyone else experience this?

Erin Andrews: Leaving ESPN For Fox Sports!

Popular ESPN reporter Erin Andrews is leaving the network, effective today.

ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys confirmed that Andrews, who has been with the worldwide leader in sports since 2004, is a goner. Her contract expires today and the network was unable to reach an agreement on an extension with her.

She will reportedly anchor Fox Sports' college football coverage this fall.

Beautiful Erin Andrews Picture

Fox declined immediate comment Friday night, but the network is making a major push into college football and Erin would represent a major "get."

This will be Fox's first regular season of college football coverage.

ESPN, in a statement wishing her the best in the future, said that Andrews "did great work for us and we made an aggressive offer to keep her."

In other news, Michael David Barrett, the perv who filmed Erin Andrews nude in her hotel room three years ago, is scheduled for release Tuesday.
